As a consultant or someone who is doing their own search engine optimisation, it’s easy to become overwhelmed with all the rules regarding good onsite SEO.

This is often the result of over thinking and being too focused on the details and hearsay from third parties claiming to have all the answers and tricks, without consideration of the basics. These are explained clearly Google™ in the SEO Starter Guide, which was updated in 2010. Below you will find a complete easy to follow formula for doing the onsite SEO in an efficient yet complete way without getting confused. There really are only a few simple rules.

First, in order to really understand the basic formula below, it’s vital to consider search engine optimisation through Google’s eyes. It’s truly that simple, but remember, Google™ is a machine which is programmed to try and understand web sites and pages as though it was a human and organise them in a way that is easy and logical for us. A huge job for sure, so anything we can do to our websites that helps with this job, will in turn be beneficial to us and our website users.

Google™ states clearly in the Search Engine Optimization Starter Guide that it came about as a way to help webmasters improve their sites for both users and search engines. Furthermore, it goes on to explain about improving user experience and performance in search engines. It is clear from these few lines, and the fact that human users and search engines are almost always referred to in the same sentence or paragraph, that good user experience equals good onsite SEO.

When a visitor arrives on a website it is important for them to quickly and easily determine whether or not the page first, and then if the site has what they are looking for. That’s pretty basic, most users either look at; the URL, the top of their browser, the tab of the browser, or the most prominent text on the page. After that, they may look at any of the menus or scroll through the page checking the headings and finally the menu at the bottom. You might not do it in this order or all the things mentioned here, but we are considering most visitors generally. Now it makes sense that we should tell our visitor by saying what the page and site is about in all these areas.

Remember search engines are machines which are programmed to see things from a human’s perspective. To do this they use the html code on the page to form an equation that represents an artificial image of the page and simulates the user experience. So we simply use the; URL and the title tag to say what the page is about and the theme of the site. Then we use the H1 tag to say what the page is about, H2 and 3 tags for a little more detail and clear text saying what the menu tabs and links point to. This way Google and other search engines can easily tell if the page offers a good user experience in regards to the important words and phrases that it sees in these tags. Single page optimization is simple when it is done this way.

Here are some good useful basic rules to keep in mind when doing single page SEO.

I put these together for a client recently and they are based on my own trial and error which makes them simply my opinion. Please feel free to apply them should you wish too, the responsibility is yours. If you find they help you in some way, come back here and leave a comment and get yourself a nice backlink!

Descriptions are your free sales ad, we want to make people click through to the site. So you can say anything you like about each page, but be sure to use it’s main keyword once within 150 characters and include your phone number if you want the phone to ring. The rules for good sales script are: ask a disturbing question, provide a solution and finally call to action.

Meta tags: The most important keyword/phrase for each page comes first in the title tags and is the same word/phrase you put in the H1 tag and the wording for the URL.

Here’s an example which uses all the tags nicely.

Full website optimization is similar to single page, in that it must provide good user experience and show that it does so to the search engines.

This is achieved through good clear and relevant navigation links. In order to do this effectively it is vital to have a logical hierarchy of directories and pages for the site. Just like a good old fashioned filing system or a well maintained PC. Go from folders for broad categories to files for more specific pages. Of course this isn’t physically possible with dynamic sites, but the concept is the same.

So start at the home page which will say in general terms what the site is about using the single page formula above. It could be as general as “online shopping” if you have an online shopping site that sells everything from, soap to rare motorbikes. In this case there could be a very wide range of categories at the first level. Another case could be a more narrowly targeted website which offers a specific service. This would say what the service is on the home page and maybe have other pages at the same level for contacting, ordering, viewing examples etc. Either way it makes very good sense to have an html sitemap linked to from every page, which gives a nice view of the entire website hierarchy.

Be sure to keep your sitemap user friendly, most people don’t like to scroll down through 100s of links on one page if it’s a big site. However, they probably wouldn’t mind being able to cut straight to a page that is likely to have what they want, check the headings and shorten their search considerably. Search engines know this, and therefore, Google in particular strongly suggests having no more than 100 links on any page.

The SEO basic rules and formula are to consider the visitor experience on your website first and use the relevant html tags to clearly show users and search engines what each page is about, while providing easy to read text navigation links with a logical hierarchy of categories and pages.

And finally use a html sitemap with no more than 100 links to a page and clearly displaying categories. When a website is properly optimized in this way, it makes offsite search engine optimisation far more effective and easy to implement, so always start with simple onsite SEO basics to improve the user experience and search engine positions.
